Announcements about the roll out of COVID-19 testing on more platforms and test collection sites are welcome, but sample testing by laboratory professionals is largely hampered by shortages in competent laboratory personnel. Many of our public health and clinical laboratories have a back log of more than a day; we must do better.
The goal of CAMLT and CDPH right now is to increase testing and decrease turn around times so that a more effective response to stem the spread of COVID-19 in California can be achieved as soon as possible. Governor Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order N-25-20 which allows people to temporarily perform high-complexity SARS-CoV-2 testing if they meet Federal CLIA personnel requirements for high-complexity testing was issued on March 12, 2020.
What does this mean and how can you help? Any actively licensed or inactive/retired CLS, PHM or MLT is permitted to perform high-complexity SARS-CoV-2 testing in any certified public health laboratory or licensed clinical laboratory for the duration of this emergency. Together, we can save lives.
In addition, we are asking all clinical and public health laboratories to let CAMLT know if you are in need of short and/or long term COVID-19 testing personnel. Email us at office@camlt.org
To date, CAMLT has received requests from following laboratories in need of competent laboratory COVID-19 testing personnel. CAMLT does not screen or investigate the request by a potential employer. All applicants are encouraged to investigate potential employers before accepting a position.
