About the event

  • Session 1 - 245-301 - Friday morning - 3 CEU
  1. A) The Dollars and Cents of Laboratory Finance - Mark Barglowski – Providence Medical Center
  2. B) Advances in ANA patterns and ICAP Clinical Implications - Justin Hanenberg - Sebia - ANA HEp-2 IFA plays a crucial role in evaluating and diagnosing various autoimmune diseases. This webinar will review and discuss the history of autoimmunity and it's causes. We will cover ANA HEp-2 IFA pattern recognition and education on Nuclear, Cytoplasmic and Mitotic patterns and the phases of mitosis based on updated ICAP nomenclature.
  • Session 2 - 245-302 - Friday afternoon - 3 CEU
  1. Select and Bioterrorism Agents - 3 CEU - Nicole Green, PhD - Director, LA County Public Health Laboratory.
  • Session 3 -  245-303 - Saturday morning - 3 CEU
  1. A) Advancements in Diagnostic Testing: Learning from the Past and Navigating the Future of Clinical Laboratories - Dr Payman Nasr - California State University Dominguez Hills - The clinical laboratory has transformed from basic diagnostic techniques to advanced, high-throughput technologies. This presentation explores key milestones in this evolution, focusing on the impact of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and digital PCR (digiPCR). These technologies are crucial in precision medicine, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, enabling personalized treatment plans, and improving patient outcomes.
  2. B) Therapy Resistance in Multiple MyelomaI - Dr Jahan Abdi - California State University Dominguez Hills - Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic neoplasm primarily confined to bone marrow and characterized by clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells. MM clone displays a high level of genome instability and a range of genetic and chromosomal alterations. This clonal population of MM cells also produces immunoglobulin free light chains (FLCs) causing diverse complications. Current evidence suggests that bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) play crucial roles in MM pathogenesis through unclear mechanisms largely explaining the disease relapse. MM is still incurable despite our deep understanding of molecular pathogenesis of this disease.
  3. C) Understanding Blood Banking: Scope, Testing and Clinical ImplicationAnthony Salazar MSHCA, MLS(ASCP) SBB - California State University Dominguez - Blood banking is an essential component of modern healthcare, involving the processes of collecting, testing, processing, storing, and distributing blood and its components to ensure a safe and adequate supply for patient  care.  This presentation provides an overview of blood banking, covering the scope of testing, clinical implications in obstetric and neonatal care, transfusions for chronically ill patients, and the management of trauma cases through massive transfusion protocols (MTP). Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of how blood banking supports various patient populations, ensuring optimal outcomes in both routine and emergency medical scenarios
  • Session 4 - 245-304 - Saturday afternoon - 3 CEU
  1. A) Launching Your Consulting Career - Michael Yu - CLIA Lab Consultant - This course is designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills needed to start a successful lab consulting business. The course begins with an introduction to the role of a lab consultant, highlighting the importance of technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and continuous learning. Participants will then learn how to identify their niche by evaluating their expertise in areas such as regulatory compliance or lab management. The course will cover the critical steps of conducting market research and developing a comprehensive business plan, including strategies for pricing and client acquisition. Marketing and branding are emphasized, with guidance on creating a professional brand, building a website, and networking to gain referrals. Financial management is another key focus, teaching participants how to budget, manage accounts, and maintain financial records. The course also delves into project management, emphasizing the importance of timely delivery and effective client communication. Lastly, participants will gain insights into regulatory compliance, familiarizing themselves with CLIA, CAP, and other relevant regulations. The course concludes with a summary of key takeaways and an interactive Q&A session to address any remaining questions.
  2. B) The Role of D-dimer for VTE Screening to Minimize Unnecessary Imaging Studies - Paul Riley- Stago - D-Dimer measurement, in conjunction with a standardized assessment of Pre-test Probability (PTP), is successfully used to exclude venous thromboembolism (VTE) without the need for imaging studies. Our presentation will discuss D-dimer testing applications, including the importance of using a reagent with a high specificity in order to prevent unnecessary imaging procedures.
