This position requires current technical knowledge of the changing antibiotic resistance mechanisms and recommended testing modalities. This position will supervise a staff of 23 personnel and will report to the General Manager.

Reporting

The Clinical Lab Manager reports to the Operations Manager.

Relocation

Relocation is not provided and travel is required for day trips only.

Status

Full-Time position, working Monday through Friday.

Overview

Clinical Lab Manager Duties

  • Responsible for routine testing completed by utilizing all existing Clinical Laboratory equipment and systems, including  Chemistry, Tumor Marker, and CBC
  • Responsible for basic instrumentation troubleshooting, resolving basic testing problems, calibration of instruments, and running/analyzing the appropriate controls to assure accurate test results
  • Assist and advise in the update of existing Lab system equipment, including chemistry, tumor marker, and CBC equipment at multiple clinical locations in the East Bay
  • Utilize the laboratory and clinical information systems to assist providers in detecting, diagnosing and treating disease
  • Process all laboratory blood, body fluid and tissue specimens received
  • Perform, analyze and communicate the results of patient specimens
  • Perform required testing for infusion and other clinical services
  • Complete QC logs for lab and all related equipment, and be responsible for preparation for certifications and lab inspections by all appropriate agencies
  • Create and maintain systems to manage stock of laboratory items for all locations
  • Manage site Lab assistants for coverage, capability, and quality; train lab assistants and assess for proficiency
  • Ensure lab coverage for effective clinical operations
  • Participate in recruitment of lab personnel as necessary.
  • Research and implement new tests and procedures when requested
  • Provide CLIA/COLA follow-up report to Lab Medical Director and Operations Manager

Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. or equivalent as required for Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) certification
  • Successful completion of an approved CLS program
  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license required, minimum six (6) years experience as required for CLIA licensing requirements

Salary Range

  • $90,000.00 – $110,000.00 per year, or as appropriate based upon experience

This is a part time 50% career position located in UC Davis Health System, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, located in Sacramento, CA. This position will work the night shift (12:00am – 8:30am) every Saturday and Sunday with other days during the week as needed and rotating holidays.  This classification is represented by a union.  This position is open until filled.

Responsibilities:  This position supports departmental goals through the performance of timely and accurate analytical blood and body fluid analysis in one or more of the technical sections including Blood Bank, Chemistry/Special Chemistry, Hematology/Hemostasis, Immunology, Microbiology, Toxicology, and Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics.

Requirements

· Possession of a license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

· Knowledge of Standard Universal Precautions.

· Demonstrated experience in one or more technical areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion, Immunology, Toxicology, Special Chemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Pathology) using automated, semi-automated and/or manual methods and equipment.

· Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) clinical laboratory general safety requirements.

· Knowledge of Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS/HIS).

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist II performs technical work of considerable difficulty, primarily in testing patient samples through various chemical, microscopic, serological, and bacteriologic techniques requiring a significant amount of independent judgment while operating and maintaining automated equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist licensure
Recent clinical laboratory experience
Basic computer skills, ability to read and follow written instructions (i.e., policies and procedures) as well as understand and adhere to verbal directions
Ability to write policy and procedures as well as communicate verbal directions effectively
Above average communication, organizational skills, mathematical aptitude for computations, standard formulas, and precise measurements and ability to adapt to workload demands
Ability to remain calm and function efficiently during difficult or emergency situations

PREFERENCES:

Experience in an acute care hospital
Advanced degree in a related field
Registration with a national professional organization (AABB, ASCP, NCA) and knowledge of medical terminology
