CLINICAL LABORATORY MANAGER

 

Position Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the smooth and efficient day to day operation of the Tethys Clinical Laboratory (TCL), as well as being an active participant on product development teams leading to the introduction of new tests in the TCL.

 

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to Director, Development, and Laboratory Operations

  • Will supervise licensed clinical laboratory scientists and unlicensed laboratory staff.

Position Duties

  1. Supervise licensed and unlicensed personnel in the Tethys Clinical Laboratory including scheduling, duty assignment, and performance evaluations.

  2. Plan and manage the workflow in the TCL to ensure timely results are provided to both internal and external customers.

  3. Plan and execute studies leading to the validation of new Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs) and diagnostic test kits.

  4. Participate in development of new assays and technology transfer from Development into the Clinical Laboratory.

  5. Create and implement new or improved processes and procedures to improve laboratory throughput to meet operational requirements.

  6. Review and recommend the purchase of new laboratory equipment.

  7. Develop and draft Standard Operating Procedures, Validation Protocols, and other controlled documents.

  8. Conduct highly complex diagnostic procedures according to Standard Operating Procedures, including specimen processing, performing test procedures, data analysis, and reporting test results.

  9. Review and report data.

  10. Manage Clinical Laboratory Quality Assurance compliance activities.

  11. Represent the TCL on Product Development and other cross-functional teams within Tethys.

  12. Actively participate in continuing education and in-service training programs for licensure.

Qualifications:

 

BS/BA in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.  Requires current State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

 

Prior management or supervisory experience in a regulated Clinical Laboratory is required.  Experience in managing external partner relationships and familiarity with basic project management techniques are highly desirable.  Excellent laboratory skills, strong verbal and written communications skills are necessary.

 

Good understanding of statistical methods and application to the analysis of complex assays.  Ability to work in a collaborative, flexible environment.  Strong computer skills and attention to detail are required.

 

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to specimens and material considered infectious and/or bio-hazardous.

  • Moderate lifting/bending, walking/time on feet.

  • Operation of electrical equipment/instruments containing heating and freezing components, moving parts, and high speed centrifugation.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

  • Work schedule may be modified to meet operational requirements.

POSITION #1:

 

RESEARCH SCIENTIST I/II / RESEARCH SUPERVISOR
Clinical Pathology, Roche Palo Alto

 

Will be responsible for the scientific and technical management of a GLP-compliant clinical pathology laboratory in the Department of Pathology, performing analyses (hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and coagulation) on samples from laboratory models, supporting Toxicology, Investigative Toxicology, Discovery Research, and Laboratory Animal Medicine.  We take a lead role in the selection, acquisition, qualification, and validation of new analytic equipment in the laboratory, develop, update, and optimize technologies used in the laboratory for study support, biomarker development, and diagnostics.  Additionally, this role will manage one full-time laboratory technician and one part-time technician.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in medical technology (clinical laboratory science) or equivalent education/experience, certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (CLS).  A minimum of 5 years experience working in a clinical laboratory setting and a minimum of 2 years experience managing or supervising in a clinical laboratory.  Must have excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a tem environment.  Experience with laboratory animal hematology and chemistry, pharmaceutical industry experience, GLP experience, and experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) are all pluses.

 

POSITION #2:

 

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE I/II
Clinical Pathology, Roche Palo Alto

 

Will be responsible for the operation of equipment for the collection of clinical pathology (hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and coagulation) test data as part of the Pathology Department which supports toxicology, investigative toxicology, discovery research, and laboratory animal health for Roche Palo Alto.  Will operate and maintain laboratory equipment, use a computerized LIM (laboratory information management) system to report data, and be expected to understand and comply with SOPs and GLP regulations at all times.  Will trouble-shoot equipment problems as well as assist in the identification, acquisition, qualification, and validation of new laboratory equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in medical technology (clinical laboratory science) or equivalent in education/experience (Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist) and a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.  Must have certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as well as certification by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.  Requires a highly skilled, meticulous technician who can function with minimal guidance, who is adept at problem-solving, and who has an interest in supporting the development of innovative scientific/technical solutions within the clinical pathology laboratory.  Requires excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.  Experience working in the Pharmaceutical Industry, especially in a GLP environment preferred.

Working knowledge of laboratory animal hematology and chemistry a plus.

Experience using a laboratory information management (LIM) system would also be a plus.

Advanced Medical Analysis, LLC is an independent reference laboratory nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains in Monrovia and serves the medical community in Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties.  AMA provides clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology testing services to physician groups, managed-care organizations, hospital, state agencies and other health care providers in California.  AMA interacts with educational facilities providing training sites for their students in the area of laboratory testing and billing.

 

AMA has an exciting opportunity:

  • CLS with particular experience in Automated Chemistry at the main laboratory in Monrovia.

The CLS will run CBC's on the Cell-Dyne system, perform other tests using a variety of standard and complex laboratory procedures.  The ideal candidate should have a background in immunochemistry and toxicology with one year of supervisor experience preferred.

 

Experience:

  • 2 years experience in a laboratory setting

  • proficiency with computer applications such as word processing and basic statistical analysis

  • BS degree in Medical Technology/Biological Sciences

  • California CLS licensed required

LABORATORY SUPERVISOR

 

Responsible for daily operations of the laboratory.  Minimum qualifications: Bachelors degree in Medical Technology; current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license; 3 to 4 years clinical laboratory experience; knowledge of state, federal and other laboratory requirements; CLIA, NCQA, CAP.  Knowledge of automated systems and lab equipment maintenance required.  Ability to plan, prioritize, organize, evaluate and implement change; excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving and communication skills essential.

 

The laboratory conducts moderately complex laboratory procedures onsite including microbiology, processing approximately 70,000 specimens per year.  The lab staff consists of three clinical laboratory scientists, and lab assistants/phlebotomists.

The ideal candidates will have 5 years of experience in a histopathology laboratory and HT (ASCP) or HLT (ASCP).
